Where are you based from?

My family and studio recently relocated from Minneapolis to central Wisconsin.

What do you do?

The easiest way to describe what I do would be that I’m a modern abstract painter. A little more in depth answer is that I’m a process based artist who explores different stages of the human experience through the manipulation of different materials.

How did you get started?

I grew up in an artistic family but I really didn’t think I’d be a practicing artist until my second semester of college, that was in 2006. From then I have received my BFA in Drawing, painting, and printmaking from the University of Minnesota in Duluth and have been showing works in galleries across the country for over 10 years now.

What do you love most about what you do?

My favorite part about what I do is learning something new with each new series. I know a lot of artists that are able to work within the same body of work for decades and decades but I’m not one of them. I switch up materials and imagery with every series I work on, although always trying to keep the work somewhat cohesive throughout the years!

Where do you get your inspiration?

All over; nature, architecture, music, books, anything that can inspire imagery in my head. Usually my work start out as rough sketches and slowly develop along with materials I am using.

What are some tips for other people to follow your path?

Make so much work!!! I usually start anywhere from 100-150 pieces a year. Not all of them work or get finished but they all help me progress or work through ideas or techniques.

Any favorite books, songs, podcasts, shows?

Anything by Wendell Berry, Vonnegut, Kingsolver, and I love Steinbeck. Although lately most of my inspiration comes from children’s books! I have a 2 1/2 year old that needs at least 4 books a night, so a lot of Audrey and Don Wood. As for music my taste is as eclectic as they come. “Take it with you” is my favorite podcast.

What’s identity to you?

Identity is a mixture of what makes/made you, what you make or give back to the world, and what/who you take inspiration from.
